Message from Fr. John Chrysostom Tibakunirwa, Pastor

The First Reading this Weekend presents God has set a prophetic Revelation of God's care for the Widow Zarephath, her son and Prophet Elijah. Remember this all takes place in a foreign land which is looked down upon by the people of Israel. We hear then of God's taking care of the widow after she had made a move of faith responding to the Prophet's request to feed him. She does not run out of her meager food supply. So to speak her flour and oil does not run out.

In the Gospel, Jesus and His disciples are people -watching. The Jews who enter the Temple are putting money into the poor box as alms. The widow drops in to the Temple and her two little coins. This becomes a high point for Jesus. She has little as she donates. Others have much and contribute out of their surplus. She gave all she had: The others gave some of which they had plenty.

With these Readings today, we could each ask for the grace to be able to give more -from deeper inside of us.

From the Diocese of Springfield, Office of the Vicar General

Dear friends, we have all witnessed the devastation caused by Hurricane Helene. For so many whose lives were impacted, there is a long road ahead. It is at moments like this that we are called upon to look beyond our community to help those in need.

Catholic Charities USA is engaged with directing help to the worst hit areas. If you would like to assist, you can do so through a donation portal at www.catholiccharitiesusa.org. We also have a link at www.diospringfield.org.

Thank you in advance for your compassionate response.
