Dear Friends,

I want to take this opportunity to congratulate both our First Communicants and Confirmandi!! Those who received Holy Communion for the very first time back on May 7th and our newly Confirmed who received the Sacrament of Confirmation last Sunday! Congrats to all of you!! These 2 sacraments, along with Baptism, make up the Sacraments of Initiation.

Those who have been confirmed are now able to fully participate in the life of the Church. As they get older they will begin to prayerfully discern their place in life – where God will put them to His service in the world and in the Church. In that sense, Confirmation has somewhat of a military connotation. This sacrament is one of service, of mission – those fully initiated in the Church now stand “on the ready” to serve Christ and the Church in whatever life, vocation, to which He calls them. This is important for us to understand because we are not ourselves without God. These newly confirmed will need our guidance, leadership and example in order to help them as they continue to navigate life and faith – especially as they soon prepare to do so on their own. We all have a unique responsibility to protect, support, and encourage one another to build and foster a relationship with God so that we all might serve Him to the very best of our ability.

There is a distinct parallel between Confirmation and military service. As Confirmation is a sacrament that prepares a person for mission, so also do basic training and military exercises prepare soldiers to do the same for our country as we are meant to do as Catholics – for God and one another. As a follow-up to Memorial Day, celebrated this past Monday, I’d like to offer my sincere thanks to all our veterans who have served our country. Those who put their lives on the line to protect and defend us deserve our respect and admiration. My father was in the Navy and served during WWII – part of the greatest generation that ever lived! It is men and women – like my dad – that make me proud to be an American and a Catholic. Thank you!

God bless you!

Fr. Jon
